According to the 1881 census (as of 4 April 1881) William Buie was a 22 year old farmer who lived with his parents Angus and Sarah. His ethnic origin was Scottish and was born in Ontario. His religion was Presbyterian. His census place was Billings & Campbell, Algoma, Ontario.
Walter and his brother William worked in a lumber camp in Michigan in the winter of 1889-90 and when they were coming out in the spring each bought a watch. William's was silver, open case and in 1960 his son Hewson was carrying it. Walter's was a gold covered case, a Rockford, and when he died of TB left it to his brother Angus and when he died he left it to his grand nephew, John Buie, who still has it. Either walter or William carried a revolver with them that winter to protect themselves from wolves. This revolver, a Pryce's R.I.C. #1, Serial No. 33 of 44 caliber, was eventually willed or given to their nephew Bayward Ellsworth Buie, who gave it to his grandson Brien Dougall Buie, who still has it.
